GETTING HELP IN UNIX
====================

The general help command in Unix is 'man' - it displays pages of the
Unix manual directly on your screen.  So to find out more about the
command 'grep' you would type

	man grep

The 'man' command can also do a keyword search for all the manual pages
dealing with a certain topic.  To do a keyword search add the '-k' flag
to the command, followed by the keyword.  For example,

	man -k edit

would list all the manual pages that have the word "edit" in their
titles.  The result might be a list looking something like this:

pico (1) - simple text editor in the style of the Pine Composer
sccs(1)  - sact, sact - show editing activity status of an SCCS file
tcsh (1) - C shell with file name completion and command line editing
ed (1)   - text editor
ex, edit, e (1) - text editor
ld (1)   - link editor for common object files
sed (1)  - stream editor
vi, view (1) - screen-oriented (visual) editor based on ex

You could then find out more about the vi editor by saying 

	man vi

To list all the available commands use

	man intro

You can get a printed copy of the manual pages by adding the -t flag
to your command, as in 

	man -t csh

If this fails, you can still get a printed copy by "piping" the output
from the man command into the input of the "lpr" command using the "|"
symbol (called a pipe), as in

	man sh | lpr


IMPORTANT UNIX COMMANDS
==================

 ls             - list files in a directory
 cd             - change working directory
 pwd		- print the current working directory
 more		- display contents of a file, page by page
 passwd         - change login password
 who            - who is on the system now
 finger         - give information about a user
 mail           - send or read e-mail
 lpr		- print a file
 logout		- exit Unix and log out
 exit           - exit a shell or subshell


Important note for new users: in Unix uppercase and lowercase are
different!  Unix commands are usually lower case.



HELP ON THIS SYSTEM
===================

In addition to the man command, on this system you can use the
following:

 learn-emacs  	- take the tutorial for the emacs editor
 info		- starts info, a full screen help facility


You can also get help from someone who takes care of this system by
sending e-mail to the address 'bugs'.  Give the command 'mail bugs',
enter a subject, if asked for it, then enter your request on as many
lines as you need.  When you are done, press ^D (hold down the Control
key and press the D key).  For example:

	mail bugs
	Subject:  Fortran
	What is the command to compile a Fortran program
	on this computer?
	^D
        EOT

When you get a response back you can read it by simply giving the
command 'mail' (nothing else on the command line), and then entering to
the "&" prompt the number of the message you want to read.
